We hope that your summer is in full swing and that you are enjoying a nice break and time spent together. As we prepare to begin what we hope to be the very best school year we have ever had, we want to communicate significant information relative to how school will look this year.

Students thrive in safe, structured and nurturing environments. Currently, we are planning a normal school opening on August 25. Our hope is to keep school “in the building” through a shared commitment from students, teachers, families, and staff by preventing the spread of COVID-19. Together with the local Health Department, we have developed guidance for the opening of school with all students having the opportunity to attend on a regular schedule.

However, we realize as the state relaxes restrictions, the risk of infection and the corresponding need to follow health guidelines increases. The following guidelines are intended to provide protection for our employees, students, and community.

What we will do as school and district personnel:

  • Mitigate risk/spread by encouraging physical distancing, proper hand hygiene, sanitization, wearing masks, staggering class start and release times, hallway flow adjustments, adjusting lunch times and seating, recess modifications and spacing of students in common areas.
  • Be aware of illness/symptoms in the student body and contact a student’s family immediately if a student exhibits symptoms.
  • Monitor positive COVID-19 cases and its spread in Davis District, and follow — as we would with any community health concern — the recommendation of health department officials regarding school closures, modified school schedules or in-school adjustments.
  • Continue to refine our digital curriculum to meet the needs of distance learning as it arises.
  • Modify our method of delivery, however necessary, to ensure the health and well-being of students and staff.
  • Require face coverings for all teachers and students K-12
  • Maintain 6ft distance between others when possible
  • Limit the total number of students, staff, and visitors within a school building to the extent necessary to ensure 6 feet distance can be maintained when students/staff will be stationary
  • Conduct symptom screening, including temperature checks
  • Wash and sanitize hands upon entry and frequently wash and sanitize during entire visit
  • Follow all posted health and safety guidance and social distancing floor markers
  • Do not enter if you have recently been in contact with someone who has tested positive
  • Limit nonessential visitors and activities involving external groups
  • Discontinue use of self-service food or beverage distribution

Physical Distancing

Certify Behaviors to Limit Interactions Weekly 6

  • Keep students in the same group cohorts to minimize mixing among each other, all day for younger children and most of the day for older children.
  • Rotate teachers and staff among classrooms rather than have students move between classrooms.
  • Keep students in cohorts for activities and eating breaks while maintaining >6 feet of distance between individuals.
  • Provide notice limiting and/or eliminating non-essential onsite visitors, volunteers and activities on site. Special care should be take to ensure individuals outside of the geographical area do not come onsite.
  • Arrival of individuals onsite should be staggered by groups to ensure less mixing occurs between the cohorts and also between guardians.
  • Mark the locations of seating in transport vehicles by staggering. If possible, skip rows between seats.

Certify 6 ft Between Individuals and Close Choke Points Weekly 6

  • Have physical markings displayed on the floor to identify spacing while in communal areas .
  • Space desks 6 feet apart and face them in the same direction.
  • Place physical markings in transport vehicles for seating and for queuing purposes. Have partition/ sneeze guards for the drivers. Siblings are able to sit close together in transport vehicles.
  • Partitions / sneeze guards should be placed in areas where 6 feet of distance can not be maintained, such as a front office.
  • Place directional signage in hallways or other width restricted areas where > 6 ft distance is not feasible
  • Maintain greater than 6 feet of distance for outdoor activities.

Certify Gatherings Are Limited Weekly 3

  • Limit staff gatherings and meeting to be virtually based.
  • Limit student gatherings such as field trips, spirit nights, assemblies to virtual options. If virtual gatherings are not possible, the gathering should be less than 50 people and grouped by cohorts.
  • Limit the number of individuals within the cafeteria to no more than 50 and grouped by cohorts. Meal Times can be staggered to achieve this.

Certify Sports and Extracurriculars Follow Gathering Guidelines Monthly 1

  • Certify that individuals playing, attending, coaching or involved in other ways of sports and extracurricular activities are > 6 ft apart and limited to groups less than 50

Protective Equipment

Certify Necessary PPE is Worn by Staff Weekly 3

  • Enforce gloves are being work during food preparation and while disposing of trash. Disposable gloves should not be reused.
  • Certify that staff has access to PPE and has been trained on proper usage.
  • Check the school health office to ensure that PPE stock is available since the health office will be involved with symptomatic individuals.

Certify Face Coverings are Worn Weekly 3

  • Verify that staff and students are able to obtain cloth face coverings
  • Verify that communication is sent on who requires face coverings. Those under the age of 2 or with health conditions should not be required to wear a face covering.
  • Certify that individuals understand how to remove, use and wash cloth face coverings.

Hygiene, Cleaning & Disinfecting

Certify Daily Cleaning and Sanitization Daily 4

  • Certify that frequently touched surfaces including, but not limited to, knobs, buses, dispensers, handles, keyboards, etc. and communal spaces are cleaned and disinfected according to the EPA.
  • Have adequate supplies (art, books, writing, electronic devices) to minimize sharing, if not feasible, clean and disinfect between uses of individuals and groups
  • Certify that staff has been trained on usage and storage of the disinfectants, per the EPA. If changes are made to the procedure, all staff will be retrained on the changes.
  • Certify that adequate ventilation is available (windows are open) when disinfectants are being used and that no other individuals are inside the location being disinfected othen that the person using the disinfectant.

COVID-19 Exposure- Certify Completion of Cleaning and Disinfecting Protocols Event 2

  • Close off areas with a visible barrier (rope, caution tape) that could have been used by the individual and let sit for 24 hours.
  • Clean and disinfect the areas according to the EPA after waiting 24 hours, if possible. If 24 hours is not feasible, wait as long as possible prior to cleaning.

Certify Cleaning & Disinfecting Supplies Stock Weekly 2

  • Inventory amount of cleaning and disinfecting supplies including but not limited to EPA approved cleaners, sanitizers, wipes, paper towels, etc.
  • Encourage and move towards touchless items to limit touching of surfaces, including but not limited to automatic soap dispensers, automatic sanitizer dispenser, touchless trash cans, touchless water faucets.

Screening, Ingress & Egress

Certify No Presence of Symptomatic Staff and Students Daily 2

  • Prior to leaving home, staff and students have to self-screen and stay at home if symptomatic.
  • When students and staff arrive at school, individuals are temperature screened to ensure no symptoms are present.


Certify All Health & Safety Visual Guidance Is Present Daily 3

  • Prominently display visual guidance which covers hand washing, physical distancing and PPE. The guidance should be displayed at highly used locations entrance to the school, restrooms, classrooms, etc.
  • Communicate daily during announcements about the safety measures in place.
  • Display guidance and/or communicate through email the school site rules.

Certify Stakeholders Know Guidance Weekly 3

  • Communicate with stakeholders (parents, students, staff) with updates on safety and best practices on how to reduce the spread.
  • Share the school site person that is in charge of COVID-19 concerns with all stakeholders.
  • Individuals that visit a Travel Warning Level 3 country should quarantine at home for 14 days before returning onsite. Travel should be avoided for Travel Warning Level 2 countries for older adults and those individuals with chronic health conditions. Review state restrictions on travel to high COVID-19 transmission states.

  • Display prominently for staff and individuals the National Distress Hotline phone number 1-800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66746 to reach a counselor.
  • Certify communication for COVID-19 is accessible for all, including disabilities and all ages.

Certify Daily Best Practice Reminders Daily 3

  • Physical distancing >6 feet is encouraged between people who do not live together.
  • Provide directions and enforce at least 20 seconds for handwashing with soap.
  • Provide directions on how to properly cover a cough and sneezing with a tissue and handwashing with soap after.


Establish Comprehensive COVID-19 Prevention Plan One Time 7

  • Research and review local health and education department regulations; including state, tribal, territorial and federal regulations.
  • Communicate with stakeholders on who to contact onsite for any COVID-19 questions or concerns.
  • COVID-19 Plan should include steps on how to handle symptomatic individuals.
  • Verify that COVID-19 plan contains flexible options for staff and students to encourage staying home if symptomatic, exposed to someone with symptoms, immuno-compromised, etc.
  • Develop modifications, accommodations and assistance for those students with special needs and/or disabilities, including 504 plan, IEPs, ESL, etc.
  • Develop a plan to cross-train staff and keep a roster of the trained back-up staff.
  • Plan is written and updated regularly. Communicate and share it with stakeholders.

Certify all Staff Trained on COVID-19 Procedures Monthly 6

  • Training should be conducted virtually or maintaining 6 ft distance, with no more than 50 people in a group.
  • Provide training on correct application procedures for cleaning, including storage of cleaning materials.
  • Provide training on how to self screen at home prior to arriving on site and what to do if symptomatic.
  • Provide training on flexible sick leave and worksite options available and encourage those that have symptoms to stay at home without consequences.
  • Provide training to staff for monitoring absenteeism and what signifies as an increase in absenteeism.
  • Review workers rights to a safe and healthful work environment without having employer retaliation for voicing concerns, known as the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

COVID-19 Exposure- Certify Communications & Quarantine Protocol Event 5

  • Provide an "Isolation Room" onsite for symptomatic individuals or those that have tested positive
  • Notify Those Transporting the Individual Home or to a Healthcare Facility, That Individual Is Symptomatic
  • Recommend to quarantine for 10 days after positive test.
  • Notify the local health officials and staff of the case while maintaining privacy according to the ADA. Those that could have been exposed due to contact with the individual should self-quarantine for 14 days.
  • Self-quarantine for 14 days and monitor symptoms if close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual occurred.

Certify Workplace is Modified to Limit Interactions Weekly 3

  • Provide individual containers for each student's belongings to keep them separated from each other
  • Group lockers in secondary schools by cohorts to minimize mixing in hallways or eliminate them all together, taking into account the amount of items students would have to carry without lockers.
  • Provide 'Grab and Go' meals with disposable items for meals and/or events

Certify Proper HVAC and Ventilation Procedures Weekly 4

  • Certify that ventilation systems, including air ducts and vents, are clean, free of mold, and operating properly.
  • Certify that outdoor air is being used (windows) as much as possible throughout the school day, provided it is safe to do so.
  • Evaluate and upgrade central air filters to highest MERV rating possible, with MERV-13 being the best (MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value)
  • Disable demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) and open minimum outdoor air dampers, as high as 100%, thus eliminating recirculation and improving ventilation.

Certify Proper Reopening of Closed Facilities One Time 3

  • Self-asses the water systems for safety after closure.
  • Check the building water systems and HVAC for microbial hazards such as mold and Legionella, including conducting a flush out of the HVAC systems as well.
  • Certify that pools, hot tubs and/or fountains are following the CDC Considerations for Public Pools, Hot Tubs and Water Playgrounds.

  • Review Federal, State, Local, Tribal and/or Territorial Public Health guidelines for possible guidance changes
